The Lost Boy Of Banaras is a novel about a fourteen-year-old boy, Allan, in a small town near Banaras. Charting the struggle between religion and human aspirations, the novel tells the tale of a young boy who doesn’t quite understand what it is to be “Hindu” or “Muslim”. With all the curiosity and healthy irreverence of a child, he seeks and embraces new experiences, beyond what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable by his religion and community. Allan is Muslim and yet is strongly attracted to Hindu rituals and practices, and feels powerfully drawn to the river Ganga. His story speaks of a time of shared and syncretic religious space in India, before the politics of division and hate took over. Like others in his place, Allan tries to confirm to the norms and stay within stated confines; but when personal tragedies strike and life seems to make far less sense than before, he takes a decision resulting in tragic consequences. While the novel questions the frequent inflexibility toward individuals within religion and societies, its chief interest lies in telling the very human and moving tale of its protagonist. Allan’s story is of a Rejection of dogma, and the demand for freedom to live his life the way he sees fit: universal human struggles for survival and acceptance. Questioning the beliefs and practices of one’s own religion are often invisible but ever-present undercurrents in any society. Allan, who fears being buried in 1 grave and is frightened of the Islamic belief of a burning hell, a dozakh, that awaits him after death, seeks other means offered by other religions.
